Important Art

There are numerous works of art and literature that enrich my life for the simple, but essential reason that they help me to see. One of these paintings is by artist Mandy Hensley, which was used for the cover of Origin of My Birthplace. It is important to me because it is Mandy’s artistic interpretation of one of the two dreams that formed the basis for my latest book.

The dream involved the snow-white breath of God blowing over the ocean of my soul, which it penetrated and entered, taking me into the deep, where the breath of God bathed me in the infinite generativity of the source of life.

Mandy’s painting hangs in my study as an invaluable work of art that brings me into communion with the infinite.

Another work of art is a painting by one of Mandy Hensley’s mentors. Artist Cheryl Hooks painted a series on the subjects of human trafficking and domestic violence. Her exhibition then moved to nature as a source of healing.

One of her paintings is entitled Sunrise at Baldhead, which hangs in our living room. Baldhead is a place of sacred retreat for Cheryl, and her astonishing painting is a source of retreat and renewal for my wife Nancy and me.

This book was an amazing piece of Literature. Mr. Blackwell is very good at helping Christians understand the spiritual formation of God’s gospels.
