Years ago, I learned that one of the most important things I can do for myself involves discovering and embracing my highest purpose in life. It’s something I can return to from time to time, especially if I am out of balance, or in a horrible mood. And what I learned is this: my highest purpose is to support others as they seek to become their best selves—in ways that work for them. Why do I add a condition: helping others to become their best selves in ways that work for them? Pretty simple. I have known way too many people who want to decide for others what they should be. I even knew a woman who wanted other people to welcome her advice. According to her, her advice was the pearl of great price, and she felt justified to impose her advice on anyone of her choosing. Alas, several of us who were on the receiving end saw it otherwise.
There is no way for me—or anyone else, for that matter—to decide what your highest purpose is. That’s for you to decide, and if I can do it, anyone can. Find some time where you can be quiet. If you don’t have a journal, I encourage you to get one. Spend a few minutes each day allowing yourself to become quiet, and ask yourself, what is my highest purpose? Eventually, something will begin to emerge in your consciousness. Write it down. In not too very long—a day or two, a week or two, or perhaps a month—thoughts, ideas will begin to flow. In the not too distant future, you will be able to say, “Ah-Ha! So that’s my highest purpose.” It will become a wonderful North Star or anchor for you, providing your life with rich meaning
I wish you deep meaning on your journey.
